Shield Customization. 16 is a funny number.
Maybe u could personalize a shield to get +4 al bonus to it (20 is a prettier number) - would basicaly work the same as customization, only u can wield. i mean, i use a shield i know i'll never sell or trade cos its just what i have been looking for since i started GW back in may 05.
So why not? +4 al to customize shield?

Balance issues might arise from this change, but I like it, and hence would like to see it implemented, therefore

As if hammers weren't unpopular enough already! Buffing shields is just going to make them even less desirable!
If you buffed shields, then you'd have to go buff all the other off-hand items. And then you have to buff two-handed weapons to make up for the fact that they can't be used with off-hand items.
Plus you've got the fact that only warriors can use shields effectively, and don't they have enough armor already? <.<

There's no harm in +5 energy to customized off hands at all, same as all customizations. usefull-ness should be given if u are willing to negate all value, ie: customizing a req.9 fellblace 15^50 thatu know u will never trade..u will use it forever so it should be that same for other items..there will be no balance issues.
/signed for off hands aswell ^^

No, I guess it is an odd number, I mean, tanks couldn't tank well enough before... but I don't know. If we're going for all off-hands, I guess I'll sign.

16 is a great number! It's 2^4, or 4^2, or (2^2)^2. Think base 2 and it looks great;
1000 for 16 instead of 1010 for 20
/notsigned
It being a non base 10 number makes no difference. The shield provides 16AL, which is 1-(2^-16/40), or a 24.1% damage reduction - it would be a 29.3% reduction with 20 AL, and that's a significant change.

If you can customize a weapon to do 20% more damage, the least ANet can do is give shields +4 Armour.

I would like one with 40, 20 may be pretty but 40 is gorgeous.

Yeah, I think 100 or so would be nice, and maybe I can have it blind foes that strike me 50% of the time.
Just because it would make your character stronger doesn't make it a good idea. Think before signing.

Yeah, chain lighnening does 85 damage. That isn't a very "nice" number so lets make it do 90 or 100 damage. It's a "nice" number. As a college math major talking here, I find your entire arguement ridiculous. There is no logic to it. Pi isn't exactly a nice number, but it is useful as heck.
In fact, I think 16 is a nice number. It's a perfect square. It is also the first integer (besides 1) that can get an integer after taking the 4th root of it. 2^4=16
A.net didn't pull 16 as the max armor for a shield out of a hat. It was done with careful intent in order to balance the game.

some very good arguments have been presented..some sound a little "Flamey" so i suggest those guys go and have a nice warm bottle and a nap. For the others who offered Real opinions how about if the +4 al was conditional to your style of gamplay ie;
Magmas Shield 16al (requires 8 str)
+29hp
-2 dmg (while in stance)
Customized +4 al (vs slashing dmg)
or vs fire, ice,lightning,blunt,peircing?? how about that? would that help the balance issue in questions.?
just a thought

Bad idea. Even with the customized versus a certain attack. Every reason why it's a bad idea is stated above, no need to say more.

Rather amusing to look back and see all those not signing don't have warriors listed in their character lists.
Still seems like a nice idea, since pretty much everything else can be customized in the game.
Look at a lot of movies, you see warriors with their own shields. Look at Dragonheart, he customized his shield with a tooth of each dragon he had killed.

/signed. Revive thread too. It makes sense. Only shields should be allowed to be customizable to provide a small armor bonus. You can't customize foci to provide more energy, unless somehow you can imbue them with a monster essence much like the mursaat infusions. But shield customization just makes perfect sense, and no amount of 'what about other stuff' justifications can not make it perfectly sensible.
